On vit un moment étrange où plus de la moitié de l’humanité est en confinement ou en quarantaine, appelez ça comme vous voulez. Certains pays sont plus touchés que d’autres, les règles varient aussi d’un état à l’autre.
Pour s’y retrouver un peu et se rendre compte qu’on est tous dans le même cas, on a pris contact avec des surfeurs éparpillés un peu partout sur notre belle planète bleue pour savoir comment ça se passe chez eux.
Le photographe Fabien Voileau nous répond aujourd’hui.
Wrecked : Salut, tu vas bien ? Peux-tu te présenter, nous dire d’où tu viens et où tu te trouves en ce moment ?
Fabien Voileau : Ca va très bien, on reste patient et on prépare l’après confinement.
Je suis photographe, basé à Paris et originaire du sud de la Bretagne. Actuellement, je suis en famille avec ma femme et mon fils dans notre fief breton, où nous étions partis une semaine avant le confinement. Finalement, on y resté.
W : Quelle est la situation chez toi ? Êtes-vous confinés ou non ? Quelles sont les règles ?
FV : On est carrément confinés, on fait une sortie « légale » d’une heure par jour, tous les 3, le long de l’océan. Les règles sont les mêmes partout sur la côte : plages et surf interdits. Même frustrant, on se considère privilégié, car on est mieux ici que dans notre appartement parisien.
W : Comment sont les vagues ? Qu’est ce que vous risquez si vous allez à l’eau ?
FV : Y’a eu des vagues, du bon vent de terre, donc frustrant. Le risque sont les drones et hélicoptères qui ratissent bien la côte, et qui envoient les prunes de 135 balles à tour de bras. Globalement, c’est très bien respecté.
W : Qu’est ce que tu penses de la situation actuelle ?
FV : Elle est unique et très anxiogène. C’est une période bizarre, psychologiquement, socialement, professionnellement. Être confinés avec des enfants, c’est pas hyper simple tout le temps, en plus de bosser. Mon inquietude se porte sur le travail, j’ai perdu tous mes projets jusqu’à cet été.
W : Tu fais quoi pour t’occuper ? Des conseils pour nos lecteurs ?
FV : Mes journées sont toutes les mêmes, c’est fou ce truc !
Après avoir terminé mes projets d’editing commerciaux, je suis en ce moment sur l’organisation et l’édit de mon premier livre qui devrait sortir en fin d’année.
Mais aussi une mise à jour importante de mon site (enfin), je réponds à une interview par jour, je prépare des publications print qui arrivent cet été (Air France Madame, Surfer’s Journal, Salt Water, etc). Bref, je ne m’ennuie pas.
Pour résumer, le seul conseil que je peux donner est de changer radicalement d’organisation pour tenir mentalement.
Je fais une mini semaine en 1 journée, en consacrant moins de temps à chaque étape que d’habitude : travail, jouer et m’occuper de mon petit garçon, 30mn de sport, balade d’une heure à pied, un peu de skate et bien manger.
W : Est-ce que tu peux nous conseiller un livre, un film ou un album ? Ou un de chaque si tu te sens inspiré.
FV : Un album : The Strokes / The New Abnormal. À écouter d’un trait et au casque. Incroyable.
Un film : Casino et Mean Streets de Martin Scorsese. Du classique à voir ou revoir.
Un livre : Patti Smith – Just Kids. Parfait pour plonger dans le NYC époque beat génération.

We’re living in a strange time when more than half of humanity is in confinement or quarantine, call it what you want. Some countries are more affected than others, and the rules vary from place to place.
In order to find out what’s really happening out there, we reached out to surfers spread across our beautiful blue planet and asked what’s going on where they live.
Photographer Fabien Voileau answers us today.
Wrecked: Hi, how are you? Can you introduce yourself, tell us where you’re from and where you are right now?
Fabien Voileau: It’s going very well, we’re being patient and we’re getting ready for the post-confinement period.
I am a photographer, based in Paris and originally from the south of Brittany. I’m currently with my wife and son in our place in Brittany, where we left a week before the confinement. In the end, we stayed there.
W: What’s the situation like where you are? Are you confined or not? What are the rules?
FV: We’re totally confined, we do a « legal » walk of one hour a day, the three of us, along the ocean. The rules are the same everywhere on the coast: beaches and surfing are forbidden. Even if it’s frustrating, we consider ourselves privileged, because we are better here than in our Parisian apartment.
W: How are the waves? Are you facing tickets if you do?
FV: There were waves, good offshore wind, so frustrating. The risk is the drones and helicopters flying above the coast, and sending 135€ tickets. Overall, it’s very well respected.
W: What do you think of the current situation?
FV: It is unique and very anxiety-provoking. It’s a strange time, psychologically, socially, professionally. Being confined with children isn’t easy all the time, besides working. My worry is about work, I lost all my plans until this summer.
W: What do you do to keep yourself busy? Any advice for our readers?
FV: My days are all the same, it’s crazy this thing!
After finishing my commercial editing projects, I’m currently working on the organization and editing of my first book which should be out at the end of the year.
But also an important update of my website (at last), I’m answering one interview a day, I’m preparing some print publications that will arrive this summer (Air France Madame, Surfer’s Journal, Salt Water, etc). In short, I’m not bored.
To sum up, the only advice I can give is to radically change our organization to be mentally fit.
I do a mini week in 1 day, spending less time on each step than usual: work, play and take care of my little boy, 30mn of sport, a one hour walk, some skateboarding and eat well.
